Quest Board · redesign · for players

Seven ways Quest Board could work for you

Ryan is redesigning Quest Board and wants the player side to be decided by the people who play. Below are seven different ways the app could be organised, drawn as grey sketches so the question is "how does this work" rather than "is it pretty", plus the app as it is today for comparison.

1 · Look Each version has four screens: your home screen, a session, the game night itself, and afterwards, each drawn for a phone and for a laptop. On a phone, tap through the screens one at a time; tap Full size on a laptop drawing to look at it properly.
2 · Rate each one Under every version there is a five-point scale and a box. A word or two is plenty; "I'd never open that tab" is exactly the kind of thing that helps.
3 · Answer four questions At the end: pick your two favourites and answer four short questions about how you actually use it now. Ten to fifteen minutes; you can stop and come back, it saves as you go.
Your answers save as you go, under the name you give at the bottom, using the key on the link Ryan sent you. Come back on this device any time to change them. If saving is unavailable, a "Copy my answers" button appears instead.
below this dashed line you would be scrolling 1 a note, explained under the drawing the part that is different in this version
C0

Today, as built (v4.3.0)

This is Quest Board as it is now, drawn the same way as the others so you can compare: a dashboard with a "Needs you" list, the campaign page, a long session page with "Are you in?" near the top, and the Table view during play. Rate it too. If it already works for you, that is worth knowing.

Home

The dashboard as a player: the heading and its three buttons, then "Needs you" if anything is waiting, then your campaigns — the same single column on a phone and on a laptop.

Nothing is hidden or reordered at this width — it is the laptop page, narrower
  1. The three buttons and the forms they open sit above the list of things waiting on you, so tapping Join or New Campaign pushes that list further down the page it is meant to head.
  2. The list only exists while something is waiting. When it is not there you cannot tell whether you are clear or whether it simply did not arrive — a free evening and a quiet failure look identical.
  3. Votes, RSVPs and a session being played show up here; a finished session never does. Nothing on your home page tells you last week's recap is ready to read.
  4. A campaign card tells you when you next play, not what it wants from you: the vote and the RSVP are on a session page two taps further in.

Session

S12 "Under the Saltworks", confirmed, as a player sees it: three columns on a laptop, and on a phone those three columns end to end in the order the page declares them.

  1. Yes / Maybe / No is put first in the middle column on purpose, so on a laptop it sits at the top of the page beside the date. On a phone that column starts after the title card and the catch-up recap, so the one answer the app wants from you is a scroll away.
  2. The time is given in the group's zone with your own underneath it, every time, so nobody has to do the arithmetic in their head.
  3. Add to calendar lives in the third column, and on a phone the third column comes after everything else — so the thing you want on your way out is at the very bottom, under the quotes, the loot and both note boxes.
  4. A session's summary appears on its page only after the GM has approved it — until then the space is empty and nothing says when to come back. By the time it fills, the "previously on" catch-up above it has gone: it only exists while a session is still ahead of you.

  1. There is no route to last week's story that starts from a link: you go to the campaign, open Sessions, switch to Completed, open the session and scroll to the summary — four pages, and only if the GM has approved it.
  2. The list of finished sessions gives titles and dates and nothing else, so working out which one was the amphora means remembering, or opening them one at a time.
  3. On a phone the campaign page puts the whole member list, with everybody's character rows, above the session list — so the way back to last week is at the bottom of a long scroll.
  4. Once you are reading about Keeper Halloran on a phone there is no search and no category list at all: the column that holds them is dropped at that width. The panel that says which sessions he appears in is the very last thing on the page.

C1

Campaign Desk

The same shape as today, tidied up. Your phone gets a bar of tabs along the bottom (Sessions · Table · Wiki · More), your home screen gets a "This week" list, and the session page's buttons sit in a row under the title that stays put while you scroll. Nothing moves to a new place; it just gets easier to reach.

Home

Above all your games: what is waiting on you, when you next play, and last week in one line — your campaigns move to the side.

No tab bar out here — the tabs belong to a campaign
  1. One list of everything waiting on you, grouped by which game it belongs to, so a vote in one campaign and an RSVP in another are one glance rather than two visits.
  2. "This week" answers the only question you ask every week — when do we play, and does it still need something from me — with the answer button on the same line.
  3. Last session in one sentence, on the front page: enough to remember where you were without opening anything.
  4. Your campaigns move to the side column. They change least often, so they stop being the first thing you have to read past.

Session

  1. The row under the title stays put as you scroll, so on a long page the two things you actually came to do — answer, and open the table view — are always one tap away.
  2. On a laptop those same two live in a side column, so the page itself can be read straight down without stepping over buttons.
  3. The page reads in the order the evening happens: when it is, are you in, what you wrote, what happened last time, then the recap in that same place afterwards. Parts that do not apply yet say what they are waiting for instead of disappearing, so it looks the same every week.
  4. While you are being recorded the page says so, says what is listening — the group's voice chat or a microphone on the table — and gives you nothing to press. Starting and stopping belongs to the GM.

  1. Every past session carries a line of what happened, so you can find the night you mean from the list instead of opening five sessions to work out which one had the amphora.
  2. The recap, the quotes and the people you met are one block in one order, every week, and the names are links — so catching up and looking someone up are the same movement.
  3. On a phone the wiki keeps its search and its categories behind a Browse button instead of dropping them, so you can look a name up from wherever you are reading.
  4. An article says which sessions someone appeared in, which turns a name you half-remember back into the night it happened.

Session First

The app opens on this week's game. Every session page has three tabs: Plan (vote, "Are you in?", your notes), Play (during the game), and Review (what happened). A thin "Now" bar at the top of every page names the one thing waiting on you, so you never have to go looking for it.

Home

Signing in as a player: a strip that always names the nearest session and the one answer it wants from you, then one card per group for this week.

  1. The strip under the title bar names the session closest to happening and the single thing being asked of you, and it stays there on every page — so the next game is never something you have to go looking for.
  2. Each group gets one card for the evening in play: the time in the group zone and in yours, who has answered, and one button. Nothing else on the page competes for the tap.
  3. Anything with no card of its own — a vote for a session that has no date yet, a recap you have not read — sits in one short list, instead of arriving only as a Discord message you scrolled past.
  4. On the phone the same card comes first, so the answer the group needs from you is under your thumb before you scroll anywhere.

Session

One evening, one page, three words across the top. Plan is where you say whether you are coming and read up before the night.

  1. Plan, Play and Review are the same evening in the order it happens: getting ready, the night itself, what happened. You never have to work out which part of the app a session lives in, because it is all one page.
  2. The time is written twice, in the group zone and in yours, with the calendar button beside it — so nobody counts hours in their head and nobody turns up an hour late.
  3. What you walked out with last time sits next to the plan: the cold open and the people you met, so you can arrive knowing where you left off without rereading a whole recap.
  4. On the phone the three words sit directly under the title, above the fold, and everything below is one column in the order you need it — when, who is coming, last time, your notes.

  1. The night you played and the recap of it are the same page — Review is simply the third word across the top, so you go back to where the session already was instead of hunting for an archive.
  2. What you get is short and read-only: what happened, the lines worth keeping, and your own notes from that night. Checking and approving all of it is Mara's job, and none of that appears here.
  3. Names from the recap lead into the campaign encyclopedia and the search box is right beside them, so "who was that keeper again?" takes one look — and his page says which nights he turned up on.
  4. By the time you are reading a recap, the strip at the top has already moved on to the next thing wanted from you: here, voting on when S13 happens.

Your take on C2 Session First

Console & Companion

You get a small app of your own with five tabs: Next (the next game and "Are you in?"), Table (during play), Recap, Wiki, and Me. Nothing in it is about running the game; that lives in a separate, bigger app for the GM. If we play in person, the Table tab is optional: the same thing shows on a screen everyone can see.

Home

A player gets a phone app of their own — five tabs along the bottom — and it opens on Next: the coming evening and the answer it wants from you. On a laptop it is the same app in a narrow column.

  1. The first thing on the screen is the next evening and the one answer the group needs from you. There is no dashboard to read and nothing to triage — if nothing is waiting, the card simply says when to turn up.
  2. On a laptop you get the same single column, centred, rather than a different, busier version of the app to learn. The group you are looking at is named at the top, and that name is how you switch to another one.
  3. The voting grid appears only while a vote is actually open and disappears once the date is fixed, so the screen never carries choices that no longer apply.
  4. Five places along the bottom are the whole app for a player: what is next, the table, the recap, the wiki, and your own settings. The trade is that there is no page listing everything the group has ever played — you reach sessions through Next and Recap.

Session

Tapping the card on Next opens the evening as one sheet: when, whether you are in, what happened last time, your notes — no tabs, no phases, one scroll.

  1. One evening is one scroll — when it is, whether you are in, who else is, last time, your notes — with nothing hidden behind tabs you have to think to press. You came here from Next and Back takes you straight there.
  2. Buttons that only make sense at a particular moment are shown greyed with the reason beside them, so nothing appears out of nowhere on the night and nothing looks broken beforehand.
  3. Your notes are private to you and Mara's are hers, labelled as such, so you always know which box you are typing into and who will read it.
  4. The five tabs stay put while you read, so when the game actually starts you jump to Table from wherever you are, without backing out of anything.

Two of the five tabs are for afterwards. Right: Recap — last night's story, the lines worth keeping, and who you met. Left: the Wiki tab on a laptop, search first, the article as one reading column.

  1. The wiki opens on a search box, because when you look something up you already have the name in your head — you are checking a detail, not browsing an encyclopedia.
  2. An entry is one column you can read straight down: what he is, the line saying he turned up in S11 and S9, then the facts and the nights he appeared on. Nothing is squeezed into a side strip that becomes unreadable on a phone.
  3. The recap has a tab of its own, so catching up the morning after is one tap and never requires finding the right session first. If you were at the table without a phone, this is where the whole evening comes back to you.
  4. The people and places from the recap are listed with the nights they appeared on, and tapping one goes to the wiki — so a name you half-remember does not need a message to Mara.

The Feed

Your home is a feed of what happened, like a group chat that only says useful things: "Session 13 proposed — vote", "Tuesday confirmed — are you in?", "Recording started", "Recap ready". You answer inside the item. During a game, the things the GM reveals appear in the same feed as they happen.

Home

Your home page is the feed: everything the group has done, newest first, with the vote and the invitation answered inside the item you read them in.

  1. Waiting on me shows the same list with everything else taken out, so “does anyone need an answer from me?” is one tap and never lives on a different page.
  2. On a laptop the two things a list is bad at answering — when we next play, and who has said yes — sit permanently down the side. On your phone there is no room for them, so you scroll.
  3. The vote is answered where you read it: the three times, your yes or maybe, save. Nothing to open, and you can change your mind later by scrolling back to the same item.
  4. “Are you in?” works the same way, with buttons sized for a thumb, and it tells you how many others have answered so you know whether the night is really happening.

  1. Opening a session does not take you out of the list: it slides over it, and closing puts you back exactly where you were reading.
  2. The time is given twice — the group’s clock and yours — with a button that drops it into your own calendar, so nobody does the sums in their head at the wrong hour.
  3. Your answer and who else is coming are the first things under the title. Below that the page runs in the order you need it: what you wrote, what Mara wrote, what happened last time.
  4. At the bottom, everything that has happened about this night, in order. “Why does it say Tuesday?” and “who has answered since I last looked?” are things you can read for yourself instead of asking.

  1. The Wiki tab has its own search, so a name you half remember is enough: type “Hall” and the entry comes up with the sessions he was in.
  2. The entry also lists the moments he actually came up — shown to the table in S11, named in the recap, quoted in S9 — so “who is this again?” leads back to the night it happened rather than to a paragraph someone wrote.
  3. The recap is simply the next thing in your list, with the names in it as links. Nothing to subscribe to and no email to find: if you missed the night, you scroll.
  4. The lines worth keeping, what your character came away with, and any entry that changed all arrive the same way — and the Wiki tab is there for when you would rather go looking than be told.

Command Deck

This one is built for the GM's desk, where things sit side by side. For you it is simpler: one panel at a time on your phone, a strip at the bottom to switch between the ones you have open, and a search box that finds anything: a game, a place, a person.

Home

Home is one panel: what is waiting on you and what is happening this week. One search field reaches everything else — a game, a place, a person.

  1. One field finds everything: a game night, a place, a person, and it is how you reach the wiki without having to know where the wiki is. It is the front door of this version — if you would not use a search box, this one will feel empty.
  2. The only two things waiting on you sit at the top, and nothing else pretends to be urgent.
  3. The space beside stays empty until you open a second thing into it. On a laptop that is the point of this version: two things you are comparing, side by side.
  4. On a phone the same thing becomes a search box on top and four buttons at the bottom, and you see one page at a time — which is most of what makes this version special taken away.

A session

The session is one card with three parts: Plan is open, the rest stay shut until they matter. A name in it opens beside the session on a laptop, and in front of it on a phone.

Search
  1. A session is one card in three parts. Only Plan is open, because before the night the only thing that concerns you is whether you are coming; the clock and the write-up stay folded until there is something in them.
  2. Tap a name in “previously on” and it opens next to the session rather than on top of it, so you can remind yourself who Halloran is without losing your place in the page.
  3. Both clocks sit at the top, and your answer and who else is coming are the first things under them, so “are we playing, and can I make it” is one glance and one tap.
  4. On a phone “beside” becomes “instead”: both are still open, only one fits on the screen, and this bar swaps them. It is the honest weak point of this version — the thing it is best at is the thing a phone cannot do.

  1. Your own phone shows the same cards as they arrive, with your notes underneath them, kept to yourself.
  2. Honest about it: a player ends up with one panel and a switcher that has almost nothing in it. This version is built for someone with a big screen and a keyboard, and at the table it gives you an ordinary page with a spare row at the bottom.

  1. Typing a name is the way into the wiki: “Halloran” brings up his entry and it opens beside the recap that mentions him, so you read the paragraph and the person together.
  2. The list of past nights stays open next to what you are reading, so going from S11 back to S9 is one click and you never lose the thing you came for.
  3. On the phone the same field is at the top of every page. If you cannot remember whether it was Halloran or the chapel, type either — it is the only thing you need to learn in this version.
  4. What happened is one scroll: the story of the night, the lines people quoted afterwards, and what your character came away with. Nothing here asks you to do anything.

Book & Table

Two modes. Between games, Quest Board reads like a book: a contents list, the recap as a page of prose, the wiki as articles. During a game it becomes "the Table": a dark, full-screen view of what has been revealed, with big buttons, and a way out that is always visible. If we play in person, the same Table shows on a screen in the room, one thing at a time.

Home

Book mode: home is a page you read. What is waiting on you in a line each, then a paragraph for each campaign you play in — the same page on a phone and on a laptop.

  1. Anything the group is waiting on you for is three short lines at the very top, and they go away once you have answered — so the first thing you see is whether you owe anyone anything, not a wall of numbers.
  2. Your campaign is written as a short paragraph rather than a dashboard tile: the one sentence that changes every week is "this week", so you can read it in the time it takes to unlock your phone.
  3. The last recap's opening line sits right there, which is often all you need to remember where you got to — and if it is not, tapping it opens the whole thing.
  4. "Contents" is the way into everything else in a campaign — past sessions, the wiki, the highlights — so nothing is buried in a menu you have to learn.

Session

A session is a page in the book: when it is, whether you are in, the notes, and what happened last time — read from the top.

  1. The list down the side is the whole campaign and the parts of this session in one place, so you can jump to the bit you came for instead of scrolling past everything else. On a phone it is the "Contents" button in the top corner.
  2. The time is written twice, in the group's clock and in yours — and on the phone your own clock gets its own line, because half the arguments about start times are really arguments about time zones.
  3. Yes / Maybe / No are thumb-sized and near the top, and under them is who else has answered, so you can see whether the night is really happening before you commit to it.
  4. "Previously on" is a few paragraphs and the threads still hanging, so if you missed the last one you can turn up knowing what everybody else knows.

  1. On your own phone the same reveal arrives with a plain "recording" mark, so you always know whether tonight is being kept, without anyone having to ask.
  2. Everything revealed tonight stays in a row you can swipe back through, with your own notes underneath, so checking a name again does not mean interrupting the table.

After

Afterwards the session is a chapter you read. Right: last session's recap on a phone. Left: where a name inside it takes you — the same book, opened at Keeper Halloran.

  1. A wiki entry is a page of the same book, at the same reading width, with its own short contents down the side — so looking someone up does not feel like leaving the story for a database.
  2. "Appears in" names the sessions he turned up in, so if you cannot place him you can go straight to the night you met him instead of trawling recaps.
  3. The recap is the page, not a box on a page: a few paragraphs you can actually read on the bus the next morning.
  4. Under it, the people and places from that night are listed by name, and there is a search if you only remember a word — two ways in, and neither of them needs you to have been there.

Timeline

The campaign is a timeline you scroll: the next game at the top, "now" in the middle, past games below, and each one opens in place when you tap it. Beside it, an index of the people and places in the story, with the games they appeared in, so "who was that merchant?" is one tap.

Home

Each campaign appears as the top of its own story: what is coming, the night itself, and what just happened.

  1. Every line that is waiting on you takes you to the exact place in the story it is about, rather than to a copy of it — answer there and the same card is what everyone else sees.
  2. The filled dot is the night itself: both clocks, how many are in, and the one thing to press. If you read nothing else on this page, you have still answered the question the group is waiting on.
  3. Above it is what has not happened yet, below it is what has — so the campaign reads in time order, and you learn the shape once and know it for every campaign.
  4. Last session's recap sits one line under tonight's, so catching up is never a hunt through a list of past dates.

Session

A session is not a separate page: S12's card opens where it sits, with the sessions either side still visible.

  1. The session opens in place, with the one before and the one after still on screen, so you never lose your bearings: closing it puts you back exactly where you were in the story.
  2. The same card carries the night through its whole life — a grid of possible nights while one is being chosen, then the time and who is coming once it is settled — so a link someone sent you in Discord always still works.
  3. Answering is three big buttons inside the card, with the dots for who else has answered right under them; you never leave the story to say yes.
  4. What happened last time, and the threads still open, sit inside tonight's card — the thing you want ten minutes before you play is in the same place as the start time.

Back to the story
  1. Your phone shows the same reveal at the same moment, marked as recording, so you always know whether tonight is being kept without asking.
  2. Notes you type here stay attached to this session, and "Back to the story" puts you back on the timeline at tonight — nothing you wrote is stranded in a screen you had to leave.

After

Scroll back down the story and S11 is where you left it, open, with the recap inside. Right: the index tab, where a name tells you which nights it belongs to.

  1. The recap lives inside the session it belongs to, in its place in the story, so catching up is scrolling back a little rather than finding a different page — and what changed between sessions is written in the gap.
  2. The list down the side is everyone and everywhere named in the sessions you can currently see, which is how you find "that keeper bloke" without knowing his name is a page.
  3. On a phone that list is the second tab, so the story keeps the full width and the index is one tap away rather than a separate part of the app.
  4. Every entry says which nights it appears in, and those take you back to those sessions — so a name you half-remember leads to the evening you met him, not just to a description.

Your take on C7 Timeline

?

Overall

Two picks, four questions, your name, and you are done. Everything here is about how you play, not about how the app is built.

Which two would you pick?

Discord, the app, someone texting you, memory.
Notes, the map, the revealed cards, nothing at all.
The recap, the wiki, checking when the next one is, nothing.
